Inflammation can be a problem because it takes up too much space and sensitizes the nerves.
But inflammation can also be a good thing because it’s what heals us.
This study believes long term NSAIDs/anti-inflammatories may prevent full recovery from a hernated disc.
“Pain relief by controlling inflammation is a key strategy in the treatment of LDH, but administration of anti-inflammatory drugs may be detrimental to LDH reabsorption. However, there are some case reports that the use of oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or intraspinal steroids can induce protrusion reabsorption, which may be related to the reduction of local inflammatory edema.
Based on the inflammatory mechanism of LDH reabsorption, the early inflammatory response is involved in recruiting macrophages and inducing factors that promote reabsorption. Currently, commonly used NSAIDs or intraspinal steroids control pain by suppressing local inflammation, but long-term use of these drugs may hinder reabsorption.”
